The high mountain community of Whitepine and the nearby White Pine Cem sit along the eastern edge of the Sawatch Range, providing a detailed look at this alpine landscape within the Gunnison National Forest. This terrain is defined by a dense network of high-altitude passages and peaks, including Tomichi Pass and Paywell Mtn, which historically facilitated transit between the mining districts of Chaffee and Gunnison counties. The transition between these counties is marked along a ridge that separates Brittle Silver Basin from the headwaters of Tomichi Cr.
