Windigo serves as the focal point of this island landscape, situated at the head of Washington Harbor where Washington Creek meets the protected waters of Lake Superior. The 2011 survey details a complex archipelago of small islands and rocky points, including Thompson Island, Johns Island, and Barnum Island guarding the southern approach. The area's focus on backcountry recreation is evident through the placement of the Washington Creek Campground, Beaver Island Campground, and Grace Island Campground. To the north, the terrain remains largely undeveloped, defined by isolated features such as Agate Beach and the sheltered Huginnin Cove. The transition from the open waters of Lake Superior to the narrow inlets of Grace Harbor illustrates the unique maritime geography of this Keweenaw County wilderness.
