About this map

The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad cuts through the center of this high-desert landscape, serving as the primary corridor for development and trade in the late nineteenth century. Settlements like Gallup, Manuelito, and Coolidge are established along the rail line, while Fort Wingate remains a significant military presence in the foothills of the Zuni Mountains. To the south, the enduring cultural footprint of the Zuni people is visible at Zuni, Old Zuni, and Nutria, positioned near landmarks such as Inscription Rock and the Zuni Buttes. Geographer Henry Gannett directed this survey, which also details the early coal industry near Gallup and numerous isolated water sources like Bear Spring and Ojo Azufre that were vital for survival and expansion in this arid region. The map captures a moment of transition where established tribal lands and military outposts met the expanding industrial reach of the iron horse.
