The North Loup River and Middle Loup River converge in this section of Howard County, forming the head of the Loup River valley. The landscape is defined by a series of north-south drainage cuts, including Cady Cr and Spring Cr, which feed the river system from the surrounding uplands. Local water management is evident in several small impoundments such as Petersen Reservoir, Kolar Reservoir, and Miller Reservoir, which dot the terrain between the primary river channels.
