Grand Tower and the winding course of the Big Muddy River dominate this riverine landscape at the junction of Jackson and Union counties. The terrain is defined by a sharp contrast between the bottomlands along Tower Island Chute and the rising elevations of the Shawnee National Forest. Small settlements such as Aldridge, Halsey, and La Rue are situated along the eastern edge of the floodplain, where the flat river valley meets the steep bluffs of the Pine Hills.
