Murphy Cross Roads and the high ridges of northwest Alabama define this landscape where Lauderdale County meets the Tennessee River. The terrain is deeply dissected by numerous watercourses, including Bitter Br and Troublesome Hollow Br, which flow through a network of family-named hollows. In the southern portion of the sheet, Pickwick Lake dominates the shoreline near Wright and Gravelly Springs, marking the modern water levels that transformed this river valley. Local history is anchored by several rural burial sites such as Milford Cem, Oak Grove Cem, and the Francis-King-Lucas Cem. The topography features prominent elevations like Pettipoole Hill and Bluff Creek Hill, which provided high ground above the many creek branches like Burcham Cr and Pigeon Br.
