Writing Rock Cem sits atop the high ground of the Missouri Coteau in Divide County, overlooking a landscape defined by glacial prairie potholes and seasonal wetlands. This 2017 survey shows a region deeply tied to its section-line grid, where roads like 100th St NW and 144th Ave NW partition the land into the precise rectangles of the Public Land Survey System. The hydrography of the area is dominated by large, shallow water bodies such as Marsland Slough and Rattler Lake, which reflect the internal drainage typical of this northern plains terrain. Though sparsely settled, the infrastructure of Co Rd 7 and a network of named local roads provides the backbone for the agricultural activity that spans across Townships 161 and 162 North.
