About this map

Yadkin River serves as the central artery of this Piedmont landscape, carved into a complex network of ridges and water-powered industries during the late 19th century. The transition from the Alleghany Ridge and Saddle Mtn. in the northwest down toward the rolling hills of Yadkinville reveals a rural economy heavily dependent on river crossings and small-scale milling. Numerous fords and ferries, including Poindexter Ferry and Marion Ferry, provide essential transit before the widespread adoption of permanent bridges, though a Toll Bridge already connected communities near Elkin Creek.
