The Ute Mountain Indian Reservation occupies the northern half of this landscape, characterized by the broad expanse of The Meadows and the rising elevations of Pinon Mesa. The transition from the reservation southward reveals an industrial and recreational corridor on the outskirts of Farmington. Significant infrastructure is present, including a refinery near Flare Hill and a complex network of pipelines that service the numerous oil and gas wells scattered throughout the territory. Local social and commercial centers like the Macu Racetrack, a Golf Course, and a Trailer Park appear alongside family-identified locations such as Wallace Ranch and Wallace Tank. The terrain is deeply etched by seasonal watercourses like Cottonwood Arroyo and Shumway Arroyo, which define the drainage patterns across Norton Flats and through the geologically distinct The Badlands Arroyo.
