Cedar Valley dominates the northern half of this mid-century landscape, a broad basin defined by the steady descent from the surrounding hills. In the southern reaches, the terrain grows significantly more complex where the mining industry established a foothold. Prospectors and mining engineers will recognize several named claims concentrated in the lower elevations, including the Tintic Paymaster No. 2, Tintic Paymaster, and the Selma Mine.

Transportation through this part of Utah County followed established mountain gaps, most notably Rattlesnake Pass and Chimney Rock Pass. The ranching economy of the late 1940s is anchored by Allens Ranch, located near a water source at the base of the foothills. Numerous family-named landmarks, such as Wanlass Hill and Bismark Hill, suggest the local heritage of the area's early settlers and sheepmen, while Holdaway Canyon and Chiulos Canyon cut through the rising southern slopes.
