On the Wisconsin side, the city of Alma is perched narrowly against the rising terrain of Twelve Mile Bluff, where the Buffalo River enters the valley. Across the water in Minnesota, the settlements of Wabasha and Kellogg sit on the higher terraces above the river's floodplain.
