Gila Cliff-Dwellings National Monument sits at the heart of this rugged landscape, where the confluence of the West Fork Gila River and the Middle Fork Gila River forms the headwaters of the main Gila River. Surveyed in 1910 and 1911 by R.H. Chapman and Chester Irvine, the map documents the early twentieth-century ranching and mining character of this territory within the Gila National Forest.

A network of isolated outposts such as T Bar Ranch, Hulse Cabin, and the V Cross T Headquarters are scattered across high mesas and deep canyons like Sycamore Canyon. The presence of Meerschaum and the Meerschaum Mine in the southern reaches highlights the region's specific mineral history, while established recreational or therapeutic sites like Gila Hot Springs and the Hunting Lodge indicate the early development of the area's natural springs. This survey captures the remote geography just before the Continental Divide and along the Catron and Grant County line.
