The settlement of Alvin and the surrounding lowland wetlands define this portion of the Francis Marion National Forest in the early 1990s. Positioned along the border of Berkeley and Williamsburg counties, the landscape is a complex network of waterways, where the Santee River snakes past Wittee Island and into the cypress-laden expanses of Wittee Lake. This provisional survey shows the intricate drainage patterns of the coastal plain, characterized by naming conventions like Meeting House Branch and Whiskinboo Creek.
