About this map

Kobuk Valley National Park encompasses a significant portion of this Arctic landscape, where the meandering Kobuk River serves as the primary topographical artery. The waterway is joined by several tributaries, including the southern-flowing Hunt River and the Akillik River, which wind through a complex system of sloughs and sandbars characteristic of the region. Further south, Ahnewetut Lake and the associated Ahnewetut Cr provide key landmarks in an otherwise open terrain defined by numerous small ponds and wetland features. Surveyed under the authority of the U.S. Geological Survey with data from the Bureau of Land Management, the map reflects the remote character of the Northwest Arctic Borough. The lack of roads or established settlements emphasizes the reliance on these natural river corridors for seasonal transit and traditional land use within the park boundaries.
