About this map

Rio Grande waters define the international boundary between the United States and Mexico in this South Texas borderland. The landscape is characterized by the arid drainages of Dolores Creek and Arroyo Salado, which cut through the brush country toward the river. Near the northern edge of the map, the historic settlement area of Poblacion de Dolores and the neighboring Arroyo Dolores represent long-standing habitation in Zapata County. Farther inland, the ranching economy is evident through several water management features, including La Perla Ranch Lake Number 3 Dam, along with similar dams numbered four and five. These cattle-country landmarks and the path of Highway 83 provide a detailed look at the rural infrastructure of the early 21st-century border region.
