Lake Oahe dominates the southwestern corner of this landscape, its controlled waters reaching an elevation of 1608 feet following the damming of the Missouri River. Along its indented shoreline, the Sutton Bay Recreation Area and a nearby Boat Ramp mark the transition toward recreational use in the early 1970s. The interior terrain is defined by broad plateaus and dissected drainages, including Spring Draw and the winding course of Artichoke Creek.
