About this map

Athensville serves as the central hub of this rural landscape where the border of Greene and Macoupin counties is defined by a series of winding watercourses. The terrain is deeply incised by the drainage systems of Apple Cr and Negro Lick, creating the distinctive formation known as Happy Hollow. This 2021 survey reveals a high concentration of small family and community burial grounds, including Sheppard Cem, Reeve - Maberry Cem, and the Drake Million Cem, which are often located on the higher ground between creek branches. The road network follows a rigid section-line grid typical of the Midwest, occasionally deviating to accommodate the uneven geography of the creek valleys. To the southwest, Woodbine Country Club Lake provides a notable exception to the predominantly agricultural and forested land use that characterizes this part of Illinois.
