Moscow and Oakland anchor this portion of the Minnesota landscape along the border of Freeborn and Mower Counties. The terrain is defined by a series of waterways, most notably the winding path of Turtle Cr and Murphy Cr, which drain through the agricultural sections north of Austin. In the northwestern corner, Hickory Lake and Johnson-Pool mark the low-lying glacial depressions characteristic of the region.
