About this map

Kagalurpak Lake and Kaghasuk Lake dominate this portion of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, which remains a landscape of immense water bodies and labyrinthine wetlands. The terrain is marked by a complex network of thermokarst lakes and ponding water typical of the Baird Inlet region. Surveyed recently by the U.S. Geological Survey, the map provides a contemporary view of the shifting hydrography in the Bethel Census Area. This sheet captures a sparsely named but physically intricate environment where traditional land use and the natural environment are inextricably linked. The detailed elevation data from 2019 reflects a nearly level landscape, where even slight changes in water level redefine the boundaries between land and lake.
