The White River valley cuts through this high plateau region of Northwest Colorado, where the landscape is defined by a complex network of drainage systems. The northern reaches are carved by Short Gulch and Tom Little Draw, while the western terrain is marked by the long course of Yellow Cr and the winding Barcus Cr. This 2019 survey shows a landscape largely shaped by its hydrology and remote geology, including the distinctive Alkali Flat in the east. Access to this arid backcountry is provided by a grid of county routes, such as Co RD 122 and Co RD 88, which navigate the steep elevation changes around Pinto Gulch. The map's detailed topography illustrates the transition between high mesas and the significant corridor of Piceance Cr as it approaches the river.
