The barrier islands and cedar-swamp coast of Ocean County are captured here just before the era of intensive seaside development. Barnegat Bay dominates the center of the sheet, separating the mainland settlements from a thin ribbon of coastal communities like Lavallette and Seaside Park. A network of Life Saving Stations, including L.S. Station Chadwick and L.S. Station Forked River, stands watch along the Atlantic shore, reflecting the maritime hazards of the late 19th century.

Inland, the landscape is defined by the pine barrens and branching waterways. The Toms River and Waretown Branch of New Jersey Southern Railroad cuts a north-south path through the timber and wetlands, connecting Toms River to Waretown and Barnegat. To the west, unique local place names like Double Trouble and Good Luck appear among the headwaters of Cedar Creek. At the southern tip of the barrier beach, Barnegat Light stands as a primary navigational landmark overlooking the complex shoals of Barnegat Inlet.
