Away from the rail lines, the terrain is characterized by steep gaps and narrow passes known as gulfs, including the Williamstown Gulf and Northfield Gulf. Numerous one-room schoolhouses, such as Bull Run School and Rabbit Hollow School, are scattered across the townships of Roxbury and Berlin, documenting a dense rural population before the consolidation of the mid-20th century. Local agriculture and infrastructure are further evidenced by the State Fish Hatchery and the Barre Aviation Field.
