Haystack Butte dominates the northeastern corner of this Big Sky landscape, rising above a vast network of prairie drainages in the transition between Fergus and Petroleum counties. The geography is defined by the intermittent flows of Blood Cr, Sage Cr, and Box Elder Cr, which carve subtle coulees through the high plains. This 2014 survey records a remote ranching environment where section lines and property boundaries are marked by lonely corridors such as Valentine Rd, Bauman Ln, and Southworth Ln. These roads provide the primary human infrastructure in a region where the natural topography of the Missouri River watershed remains the most prominent feature, offering a detailed look at the land's surface before contemporary changes in rural land use.
