The campus of Western Washington University and the residential neighborhoods of Happy Valley and South Bellingham dominate the northern portion of this coastal Washington survey. Along the shores of Puget Sound, the shoreline is defined by Chuckanut Bay and Pleasant Bay, where the BNSF Railway tracks trace the narrow strip of land between the water and the rising slopes of Chuckanut Mountain. The map illustrates a landscape where urban development meets significant natural preserves, most notably around Lake Padden and the numerous smaller water bodies like Fragrance Lake and Lost Lake tucked into the upland terrain.
