Bentley Ranch stands as the central namesake landmark in this high-plains landscape where the boundary of Haakon Co and Stanley Co is defined by a straight north-south section line. The terrain is deeply inscribed by a system of seasonal drainage channels, most notably Hermaphrodite Cr, which meanders across the northern and central sections of the quadrangle. In the southeast, Wagonhound Cr cuts through the prairie, while Plum Cr makes an appearance in the southwest corner. The regular grid of the Public Land Survey System is superimposed over these natural watercourses, with gravel and dirt routes like 246th Ave and 204th St providing the primary access to this remote ranching territory. This 2017 survey reflects the persistent cattle-country character of central South Dakota, where named family holdings remain the primary markers of human settlement.
