USGS Topo · Published 2012

About this map

Big Creek and its surrounding river bottoms anchor this 2012 survey of central Calhoun County. The town is situated just north of the sprawling marshy expanse of the Yalobusha River, where various tributaries like Lickup Cr and Gaines Cr drain into the valley. The landscape transitions from the developed streets of the town center, including W Main St and S Cotton Blvd, to the agricultural and wooded reaches of Shipp Btm. Local history is preserved in the locations of the Chapel Hill Cem, Magness Cem, and Bethel Cem. To the south and west, the smaller settlements of Sabougla and Retreat mark earlier rural crossroads, connected by a network of county roads like Hwy-331 that navigate the numerous waterways including Shutispear Cr and Mitchell Br.
