About this map

The Medicine Mounds rise distinctly above the Hardeman County landscape in this early 1980s provisional survey. This cluster of four dolomite and sandstone peaks includes Big Mound and Cedar Mound, standing as prominent landmarks near the headwaters of Cottonwood Creek. The surrounding terrain is defined by a dense network of watercourses, including the South Fork Wanderers Creek and the southern reaches of Lake Pauline. These natural drainage patterns, carved into the red Permian soils, underscore the hydrological character of the region before modern land management intensified. In the southwest corner, the map shows a portion of Copper Breaks State Park, where the convergence of Devils Creek and smaller tributaries creates the broken topography for which the area is named. The survey serves as a record of the rural land structure and natural landmarks significant to the local cattle-ranching history of North Texas.
