The Tongue River valley serves as the primary corridor for movement and settlement in this portion of Rosebud County. The small community of Birney and the Birney Day School are the central hubs for this rural landscape, situated where Mission Creek and the Cheyenne Ditch intersect the valley floor. The terrain is defined by a series of drainages, including Pawnee Creek and Tie Creek, which cut through the high ground east of the Lamedeer Divide Rd. To the southeast, the protected lands of the Custer National Forest encompass the headwaters of Poker Jim Creek and the North Fork Poker Jim Creek. This 2024 survey documents the persistence of small-scale irrigation and cattle-country infrastructure, where vital water sources like Section Line Spring remain named landmarks in a dry environment.
