Black Butte and the surrounding high plains of Slope County define this segment of the National Grassland as it appeared in the late 1990s. The landscape is characterized by prominent geological features such as Chalky Butte, Tepee Butte, and Slide Butte, which rise above the drainages of Sand Creek and Deep Creek. This area of the Little Missouri region reveals a pattern of isolated ranching life, where large holdings like the Lambourn Ranch, K Lorge Ranch, and Pope Ranch are connected by a sparse network of light-duty and 4wd trails.
