About this map

Sand Dunes dominate the high desert landscape of Sweetwater County in this mid-1980s provisional survey. The area is defined by its arid hydrology, where ephemeral drainage systems like Fourth of July Wash and Greasewood Wash carve through the terrain toward isolated catchments. The Greasewood Reservoir and numerous instances of Dry Lake illustrate a landscape where water is seasonal and scarce, a factor that dictated the placement of early ranching and transit infrastructure. Evidence of resource exploration is scattered across the quadrangle, noted by various Dry Hole and DH markers, while the presence of Black Rock Springs at the southern edge suggests a rare reliable water source in a region otherwise reliant on erratic seasonal flows and Rock Creek.
