About this map

The Owens River valley and its complex water management systems dominate this mid-1990s survey of the California high desert. The massive Los Angeles Aqueduct cuts a straight line through the landscape, bypassing the natural curves of the river and Hines Slough. This infrastructure supports specialized local sites like the Black Rock Fish Hatchery and small ranching outposts such as Taboose Ranch and Eightmile Ranch. To the east, the terrain rises into the Inyo National Forest and the heights of Crystal Ridge.
