Blairsden and Graeagle anchor the southwestern corner of this landscape, situated within the Mohawk Valley where the Middle Fork Feather River winds through the terrain. The transition from valley floor to the high elevations of Plumas National Forest is marked by the Middle Fork Feather River Scenic Byway, which provides access to the small clusters of settlement at Delleker and Mable. Evidence of local industry appears in the Gravel Pits near the river and the Gaging Station used for monitoring water flow.

The northern reaches are defined by significant peaks including Smith Peak and Penman Peak, overlooking the headwaters of Long Valley Creek and Threemile Creek. This high-country region is protected as part of the State Game Refuge 1-V, where numerous springs and seasonal drainages like Betterton Creek and Willow Creek feed the larger watershed. The network of forest roads and light-duty trails connects remote junctions like Five Points to the developed recreational areas including the Golf Course and Trailer Park in the valley below.
