Six Rivers National Forest and Trinity National Forest dominate this landscape, meeting at the border of Humboldt and Trinity counties. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent high points and clearings, including Blake Mtn, Holm Buttes, and the open meadows of Severin Openings and Day Opening. The southwestern corner of the area follows the path of the Mad River, a primary watercourse fed by numerous seasonal tributaries like Pilot Cr and Rattlesnake Cr.
