About this map

Sierra Blanca dominates this high-altitude landscape where the borders of Alamosa, Huerfano, and Costilla counties converge. The terrain is defined by some of the state's most prominent summits, including Blanca Peak, Mount Lindsey, and Little Bear Peak. These peaks form a massive alpine cluster that separates the drainage of the Huerfano River to the north from the Ute Creek and Cottonwood Creek systems to the south. Historically, the area reflects a transition from high-mountain exploration to early ranching, evidenced by the Arrowhead Ranch in the southwest and scattered mines and Prospects near the high basins.
