Outdoor recreation and wilderness conservation define the southern half of the sheet, where the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail traverses the John Muir Wilderness. Dozens of named alpine water bodies such as Duck Lake, Sherwin Lakes, and Valentine Lake are positioned beneath summits like Bloody Mountain and Laurel Mountain. The transition from industrial mining at the edge of settlement to protected wilderness is clearly visible in the trail networks and preserved meadowlands like Sky Meadows.
