The Missouri River carves a deep, winding path through the southern portion of this Chouteau County landscape, creating the distinctive landform of Boggs Island. This part of Montana is characterized by high, flat plateaus dissected by steep drainage channels known locally as coulees. Notable among these are Dry Fork Coulee to the east and the dramatic descents of Spring Coulee and Sixmile Coulee, which channel runoff toward the river valley.
