Virgelle stands as the primary settlement on this portion of the northern plains, situated near a sharp southern bend of the Missouri River. The landscape is defined by the transition from high, flat uplands into the deeply carved drainages of the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. The river corridor itself is protected as the Missouri Wild and Scenic River, where the waterway winds around Boggs Island.
