The Box Butte Reservoir dominates the northwestern portion of this landscape, formed at the confluence where Cottonwood Cr meets the upper reaches of the Niobrara River. This section of the High Plains illustrates a sparse ranching and agricultural network defined by a geometric grid of county roads and section lines. The terrain is marked by significant erosion patterns, most notably in the south where the Sand Canyon drainage system, including Sand Canyon Cr and the South Branch Sand Canyon, carves through the plateau.
