The Box Butte Dam anchors this post-war landscape, holding the waters of the Niobrara River to form the wide expanse of the Box Butte Reservoir. This 1946 survey, published in 1948, captures the rural character of the Nebraska panhandle as the Bureau of Reclamation infrastructure transformed the local water economy.
