The Columbia River carves a deep valley through the high plateau of Central Washington, separating Okanogan and Douglas counties. This 2017 study illustrates the rugged transition between the high plains and the river valley, where the controlled waters of Rufus Woods Lake reflect the industrial and recreational changes of the modern era. Along the southern bluffs, Pearl Hill overlooks a network of orchard roads, including Highland Orchard Rd and Old Highland Orchard Rd, which speak to the long-standing agricultural importance of this region's volcanic soils and climate.
