The Poplar River winds through this expanse of northeastern Montana, defining a landscape of deep drainages and rural routes. The terrain is marked by numerous seasonal waterways, including the eponymous Cabarett Coulee in the south and Manternach Coulee to the north. These coulees, along with Negro Coulee and Nielsen Coulee, illustrate the complex drainage patterns feeding into the river valley. Human presence is largely defined by a grid of section lines and gravel roads, such as Old Scobey Rd and River Rd, which connect the isolated homesteads of this prairie region.
