While much of the eastern portion is protected within the Cleveland National Forest, signs of human activity and utility are scattered throughout, from the San Juan Hot Springs and San Juan Station to industrial features like a Gravel Pit and Borrow Pit. The presence of the Youth Conservation Camp in the Lucas Canyon area reflects mid-century land management practices. This survey captures the rural character of the region just before the suburban expansion of the late 20th century, particularly near the edge of San Juan Capistrano.
