Canandaigua Lake dominates this mid-century landscape, its shoreline dotted with seasonal developments and long-standing rural settlements. Along the western banks, the hamlet of Cheshire serves as a local hub, while the eastern shore shows the denser residential patterns of Cottage City and Crystal Beach. The topography is defined by the steep glaciated ravines known as gullies, including Tichenor Gully, Menteth Gully, and Fisher Gully, which cut through the hills toward the water.

Evidence of earlier social structures remains through the numbering of local school districts, such as School No 9 and School No 7, and several family and community burial grounds like Hunn Memorial Cemetery and Pine Bank Cemetery. The northern end of the lake features the recreational grounds of Roseland Park and the historic Squaw Island. This 1951 survey, updated with 1970s aerial data, reveals a transition from a primary agricultural economy to one increasingly shaped by lakeside recreation and suburban growth around the city periphery.
