The high alpine environment of the Gunnison National Forest is defined here by the massive geologic feature known as the Cannibal Plateau and the dramatic earthflow of the Slumgullion Slide. This 1963 survey, updated with 1978 photogrammetric data, captures a landscape of intense relief where waterways like Calf Creek and the Middle Fork Powderhorn Creek have carved deep drainages including Devils Canyon and Cañon Infierno.

Evidence of historical land use is visible in the network of pack trails and jeep trails that traverse the high country, connecting remote landmarks like Devils Lake and Skull Park. While largely a wilderness area, the map records signs of human exploration and activity through several prospects located near the headwaters and established recreation spots such as the Hidden Valley Campground and a Picnic Area near Deer Lakes.
