The Cannonball River defines the southern reach of this landscape, carving a winding path along the border between Morton Co and Sioux Co. This 2014 survey documents the area surrounding the settlement of Cannon Ball, where the river valley meets the rolling grasslands of the northern plains. North of the river, the terrain is marked by the prominent elevation of Castle Butte and a network of drainage systems including Cantapeta Cr and its tributaries, the Northwest Br Cantapeta Cr and N Br Cantapeta Cr. The map illustrates a sparse but regular grid of rural section roads, such as 67th St and 12th Ave, which connect the isolated homesteads and ranching lands of the Cannonball District.
