The Middle Fork Kentucky River winds sharply through this corner of the Cumberland Plateau, defining the life and transport of Breathitt County in the mid-twentieth century. Small communities and family homesteads are concentrated along the narrow valley floors of Shoulderblade Creek, Bowling Creek, and Turners Creek. Local centers such as Crockettsville and Canoe serve as anchors for a landscape dotted with numerous family cemeteries, including the Hounshell Cem and Callahan Cem.

Resource extraction and transit are evident in the northern and southern reaches of the quadrangle. In the north, the Cart PO Mine and various gas wells highlight the region's energy economy, while the southern edge features the L & N railroad line passing through Altro. Elevated landmarks like Nallors Rock and the Lookout Tower provide vantage points over the complex drainage network that includes Sebastian Branch and Wolf Creek.
