Shoshone Range peaks define the high-elevation interior of this Lander County landscape, which transitions into the broad sweep of the Carico Lake Valley. At the southern edge of the sheet, the seasonally variable waters of Carico Lake sit as a focal point for the surrounding drainage basin. The area's hydrology is marked by isolated water sources essential to the Great Basin environment, including Willow Creek Spring and Granite Spring. Erosion has carved distinct landmarks like Wilson Canyon and Rattlesnake Canyon, while the more level terrain of Smith Flat provides a break from the surrounding ridges. These natural features illustrate the drainage patterns of ephemeral streams such as Cooks Cr and Moss Cr, which flow intermittently toward the central valley floor.
