Carne and the nearby area of Lewis Flats occupy this high-desert landscape in Luna County, characterized by a sparse network of ranching infrastructure and critical water sources. The importance of groundwater for the survival of the local cattle industry is evident through the naming of several distinctive landmarks, including Peach Orchard Windmill, Wolf Windmill, Kelly Windmill, and Eagle Windmill. To the northwest, the foothills of the Cookes Range rise above the flat basin floor, which is bisected by the primary transportation corridor of 70 180. Secondary routes such as Lewis Flats Rd SE and County Rd-B037 connect the various homesteads and range improvements. The presence of Carne Well and the Carne Windmill underscores the historical reliance on these localized water points to sustain life and commerce in this arid New Mexican corridor.
