Lake Superior dominates the northern horizon of this coastal wilderness, where the high ridges of the Porcupine Mountains meet the shore in the western Upper Peninsula. The landscape is defined by its dramatic vertical relief, rising from the lake level to summits like Green Mountain Peak, LaFayette Peak, and Miscowawbic Peak. Water drains through a complex network of steep drainages, most notably the Big Carp River and Little Carp River, which carve through the terrain toward the coast.
