The Charles M Russell National Wildlife Refuge dominates this landscape along the border of Fergus and Phillips counties, where the Missouri River cuts a deep path through the northern plains. The terrain is defined by a series of alluvial flats and named benches including Doney Bottoms, White Bottoms, and Mc Farland Bench. These features, along with the numerous coulees like Carter Coulee and Fritzner Coulee, reflect the complex drainage system feeding into the Missouri breaks.
